TOPIC: Fossils I hope!

Fossils I hope! 1 year 10 months ago #21349

I think this is my third try at posting pics and summary about myself and my treasured rocks. Once I get the hang of it, there will be stopping me!! If I can't get them to show up here, I did manage to get them into an album on this site. This is the first time I have ever posted my treasures on the internet. So many of them are packed away, but I will be getting them all out soon. OK I' going to give it another try............. Oh cool wrong pic.............Geez Louise!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Maggie

Yes... fossils indeed. Marine brachiopods. Couldn't give you the species... there are hundreds of them. A more precise locality might help.

(I have also sent you a private mail on a completely different topic where I wondered if you could help with some information)

Best wishes
Roger

Hi Roger, I found these in New River, AZ. I did not get your message yet.

(private messages seem to take a while to get through... especially from the UK)

So, New River, eh? Well that's still not a great deal to go on, but I looked it up on my geo-maps. Let's take a leap of faith here, supplemented with a little logic. the fossils look to have come out of limestone. New River is on the edge of the Cocinono Plateau for which the top geological layer is part of the Kaibab Limestone Formation that stretches north all the way to the Grand Canyon and up into Utah.

The formation is Permian, so a little over 250 million years old. Likely candidates for brachiopods with features that match your pics would be Peniculauris species. The larger one on the left looks to be Peniculauris bassi in my opinion. The smaller ones could be too, or they might just possibly be Peniculauris rugatia. The two species were contemporary with one another but rugatia was smaller and the two 'lobes' were more distinctly separated. Its not possible to tell from the pics and the one on the right looks to be broken anyway.

If it is possible for these to have been found in the Henry Mountains in Utah, then I may be mistaken. I used to hunt there. 98% of what I have did come from the New River area. And now the latest comes from the streets of Phoenix, as I drive auto parts and my customers let me take what I want! (gotta love them...they think I have a good imagination!) I have another rock from Utah that has the impression of a sea shell, and when this rock was disturbed by shifting , the impression went with it. the rock is in layers. As soon as I make it into the shed I will take pictures. I have a 2 part statue that is great. I am looking for answers to your message but am settling back in at home. Have been at a friends for a month.

Hi Maggie

The plot thickens. The Henry Mountains are not a "range" (they are 5 individual mountains) and as such they have no "trend". Apart from the igneous intrusions, the sedimentary host deposits in the area range from Carboniferous through Permian, Jurassic-Triassic and Cretaceous. Within these formations there are still folds of Permian Kaibab fossiliferous limestone, so I wouldn’t change my opinion on that basis.

(PS: no hurry on my other query to you. Just whenever you have a moment).

Thanks
Roger

Hi Roger, I was positive that they came from New River as I don't travel far from home. When I found them I thought they looked like bone joints or something. Years later someone told me they were fossils. The only reason I mentioned the Henrys is because of your mention of Utah. Just for when I post the shell impression, I did find that on Mt. Pennell( one of the three,I was also on Mt Ellen.) That is where I used to go hunting in August (bow) and then again after the rut in the winter. I also found a bone pipe there but didn't realize it until 2 years later when I was looking through my stuff for an art project! I am the kind of rock hunter that picks up whatever "trips my trigger". Therefore I have a great array (tons) of rocks. I bring them home and admire them and occasionally realize that I have picked up more than just a rock. I have a piece that the colors caught my eye, and after looking at it I saw a woman, turn it upside down and it was a very mean man. I hope you enjoy them as I add them to my albums. I thank you for your help and interest in them.
