TOPIC: My 1st post. Found something cool! Uh, What is it?

My 1st post. Found something cool! Uh, What is it? 10 months 2 weeks ago #56623

Hello Experts and collectors! This is my first post on your forum. I was hunting for Cretaceous fossils and ran across this beauty of a point. I have teh Feild Guid to TX Stone Artifacts, but am having trouble with a positive ID. I find Gary points mostly in the N. Sulphur River (North TX) gravel bars, but this one was EXTRA special. I saw it and could nt believe how cool it was, but I am having trouble with an ID. I am thinking Palmillas maybe? Any expert thoughts would be welcome.

Jon

Welcome to the forum Jon from Central Illinois. That is a very nice point but a little out of my area to type. I am sure Greywolf will be around shortly.

I agree that its a Palmillas. Palmilas is found across a wide area, from East Texas onto the central costal plain and into the lower Pecos. Not common in any area. It has slight to well-barbed shoulders formed by shallow side notches. It has an long expanding stem and convex base.

Jim Poepsel sent me pictures of those. Excellent finds both; I collect relics in that area all the time and those are each nicer than any of the 25 or so points the Sulphur has given me this year. Great job!

Yeah I gotta see what it is you're looking for when you accidentally find these killer points. Welcome.

One side is definitely flaked but the side shown may have some grinding. Hard to tell

Thanks for your opinion! Joe thinks very highly of your expertise! If you are heading out to the Creeks in North TX. Feel free to give me a buzz. I am out quite a bit - mostly after fossils, but usually come home with at least 1 point each hunt.
