Perhaps the Rarest Artifact?

by Steven R. Cooper, E.I.C.

Central States Archaeological Journal October 2009

Several weeks ago I was attending a show in Indiana. Someone approached me and asked if I had examined the dugout canoe that was recently found in the Ohio River. They told me it was outside on the grass. When I arrived they had loaded it back in the truck and were preparing to leave. I asked if it would be possible to allow me a few pictures. It seems a tugboat operator had spied it and salvaged it. Since its discovery it has been sealed so that it wouldn’t further deteriorate. At one time there were thousands of these on the waterways of North America. Very few have survived. The pictures tell the story. Notice the shape of the bow, and the odd hole on the side. You just never know what will turn up at a show.

Ancient dugout canoe recovered from the Ohio River displayed on grass, showing carved bow profile, hollowed interior cavity, weathered wood grain, and a small side hole, with additional image of several men unloading the preserved canoe from a pickup truck at an artifact show.
